On a quiet Sunday evening at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, the atmosphere suddenly turned tense as Kannada film actress Ranya Rao was arrested by officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). Ranya Rao, known for her roles in films such as “Maanikya” and “Wagah”, was allegedly caught red-handed while attempting to smuggle 14.8 kg of gold worth over ₹12 crore from Dubai.

Ranya Rao, 33, arrived in Bengaluru on an Emirates flight from Dubai. DRI officials had been monitoring her movements after noting that she had been frequently traveling to Dubai over the past 15 days. On that night, DRI officials, acting on a tip-off from a reliable source, stopped Ranya Rao as she attempted to bypass security checks. The smuggled gold was found hidden on her body, jacket, and other clothing.

Ranya Rao is the stepdaughter of a senior Indian Police Service officer from Karnataka, K. Ramachandra Rao, who is currently serving as the Director General of Police at the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation. Initial investigations revealed that Ranya Rao frequently used her influence as the daughter of a high-ranking official to avoid security checks at the airport. She often requested escort services from airport police officers to bypass inspections.

Following her arrest, Ranya Rao claimed that she was being blackmailed and forced to act as a courier for the gold. This claim is currently being verified by DRI officials as part of a broader investigation. DRI officials also detained a police officer who allegedly assisted Ranya Rao on the night of the arrest, but the officer was later released after providing a statement.

Dubai has long been known as a hub for gold smuggling, and this case adds to the long list of similar incidents. Further investigations will include the source of the gold in Dubai, the source of the funds used to purchase it, and the payment methods used. There is suspicion that the transactions were conducted through the hawala system, which allows for money transfers without an official paper trail.

Ranya Rao’s arrest shocked many, particularly in the Kannada film industry. Ranya Rao is known for her prominent roles in several films, including her debut in “Maanikya” in 2014 alongside famous actor Sudeep. Many fans and colleagues were taken aback by this news and are awaiting further developments in the case.

After her arrest, Ranya Rao was taken to the DRI headquarters in Bengaluru for further interrogation. She was then produced before the Special Court for Economic Offences on Monday evening, where she was remanded in police custody for 14 days until March 18. The investigation will continue to determine whether Ranya Rao acted alone or is part of a larger smuggling network between Dubai and India.

This gold smuggling case involving Ranya Rao has captured the public and media’s attention. With the investigation still ongoing, many hope that the truth will soon be revealed and justice will be served. In the meantime, the Kannada film industry and Ranya Rao’s fans continue to follow the case’s developments closely.
